“Sorry, we don’t allow fake names.”- Facebook
About a week ago, I was so shocked when I tried to login my Facebook account and I got rejected. The reason was, MY ACCOUNT WAS DISABLED! Then, I tried the old account which I had deactivated for many weeks and would no longer use, however, it also said that my account was disabled. At that moment, I really couldn’t make my head and I felt like somebody slamming the door in my face. Thus, I visited their FAQ page and tried to dig out what had happened. Guess what? It said I used fake names. I think they don’t allow me to use “HaHa Claire” but “Claire Lam”, which is my proper English name, as my user name when I set up my account.
Here is the email Facebook sent me and you can see they always emphasize they don't allow fake names.

Anyway, I tell you my story because I want to point out that many people construct fake social identities in the social network websites like Facebook, MySpace and Match.com etc to get a chance to date their “beautiful” internet friends nowadays. People use the social networking websites as a platform or perhaps a tool for advertising and promoting the “beautiful” side of themselves while hiding their true face simultaneously. They want to be ambitious, decent and hard-working in front of their co-workers, boss and family but they also want to act cool, handsome, playful and outgoing to their online friends. To be complete in both respects, some of them create two or above accounts for different purposes. Of course, the accounts for dating purpose are their fake identities since some people like to boast of their social status and appearance etc to impress their friends. I have a friend who is really a good example of this. He told me he has 10 Facebook accounts at least. Some of them are used for spying on his girlfriend, some of them are used for keeping contact with his old schoolmates as well as family. The rest are for flirting and meeting online girls.

To dissect my case, the reason I used “HaHa Claire” instead of “Claire Lam” because I don’t want to reveal too much personal information about myself on the internet. I was worried that my information would be stolen and used for the commercial purposes or even illegal activities. (LOL) I know I am a bit exaggerated but it’s true that many other people have the same doubt as me! Nothing is impossible! And I didn’t use my old account because it had been hacked before.
That is why I always think that some social networking sites are not 100% safe and the people are not 100% real. It is just like online shopping. The description and picture of the products displayed in the online auction sites, let’s say Yahoo Auction, may not be 100% same as the real products. It is all about online “packaging”. Fake packaging.
There is a question I want to ask Facebook! That is, if Facebook doesn't allow people to create fake accounts or unreal identities, why they just let people set up an account so easily? I mean, why the procedure of signing up is so simple and easy? Don't they think it is a drawback or perhaps the origin of the problem? :P

One of my colleagues wanted to open a Facebook account for his new born daughter. My colleague is named "Lung", in English means "Dragon". So he would like to use "Little Dragon girl" (in Chinese) to be the username of her daughter. However, Facebook rejected and said it was not a real name. I feel so weird that Facebook doesn't allow people to use nicknames!
ReplyDeleteHaha!!! I feel annoyed about this. Why FB doesnt allow me to use fake name? After all, internet is a virtual world and we don't want our real personal info to be stolen and used for advertisement!!!
ReplyDeleteDoes facebook want people to use real identity for communication as there are many fake accounts? If yes, some people may feel disappointed because they cannot conceal their identity anymore! hahahahaha.....
ReplyDeleteCommunication is important for us but using real identity to communicate with other people is even more important. I think FB has been insisting in encouraging its users to provide their real identities from the day they set up. Bascially, it can be considered as one of the "rules." Otherwise, my account would not be disabled. lol!!! But yes! It's true that there are many many fake accounts on FB. Once they are caught, they will need to change their fake identity into real identity. They cannot hide their real face!!!
ReplyDeleteI am kind of admire those who can maintain more than one FB accounts! Actually I have two accounts (the second one is for playing games), but I don't even have time to login to the second one. I think FB really occupies a lot of our time!
ReplyDeleteVery interesting post, all the more so because some massively multiplayer online games actively discourage the use of real names. See for example the Club Penguin rules - this is an MMOG designed for children, and the idea is that to protect your privacy you should not use a real name. So what does Facebbok want with your real identity?
ReplyDeleteClaire, I always face the dilemma of sharing my life with my friends on Facebook or setting the highest privacy of my Facebook account.
ReplyDeleteWell, I found that Facebook is very powerful and useful LOL, but, I felt so scared of my information being stolen or for any commercial purpose...!!!
Thank you for sharing the example, Christoph!! I also think that we should not use real names for games. Regarding the issue of Facebook,I think they want my real identity because they want to fulfill their promise that they want to help people to "Connect and share with the people" in their life. I have heard quite a few stories that many people lost track of their old school friends but after joining Facebook, they reunited!! Imagining people provide fake identities, then they may not be able to recognize and reunite with their old friends.
ReplyDeleteKari, I am afraid too!!!!! As you know, media have so much control over us and they are so powerful. Sometimes, we can't control what they do to us!!!
ReplyDeleteRe: Christoph
ReplyDeleteI still have one thing to add. That is, Facebook want people's real name and identity because they always collect personal information to sell to different advertisers.
it's weired that Facebook don't let use to use the name Haha Claire. Just take an example maybe your nickname/chinese name is really called HaHa in the reality. If so, Facebook just discourages people from using their real name.
ReplyDeleteRecently, when I prepared for the last test, I found an article saying that Facebook sells our personal ID to other companies. I dun know whether this is related to your situation. However, I dun trust Facebook very much. For me, it is just a place for fun. So, I try not to put my personal information on it.
